Fall Colors

The leaves peaked in our area on October 27 and the morning of the 28th. Then strong gusty winds came along, stripping many of the glowing leaves from their branches. By afternoon the landscape had lost its splendor, save for some pretty patches here and there. Here are my favorite images from the backyard, including a butterfly, which probably froze that night.

Do you remember your favorite fishing or hunting spot while growing up? Can you still go there? For many people, those old favorite places are now developments, posted property, or too far away from where they live now. Ken is one of the lucky ones. He still fishes his favorite spot on the Susquehanna River—and it’s a doozy. His target? Catfish. BIG catfish.

After months of low water levels, the recent rain finally brought the river up to Ken’s favorite level. So he decided to do some serious fishing until well after dark, hoping to put some fillets in the freezer. In fact, the fishing was so good that he stuck with it past two in the morning! After catching a bunch of channel catfish exceeding two feet in length, the last fish of the night turned out to be a monster. Ken is a prime example of what can happen when you make a few extra casts, or stay in your deer stand for another hour.

Folks, that’s a 32-incher, on 8-pound line! But that’s not the biggest he’s ever caught. That would be a 36-incher. Wow.

Summer Remnant

Our tomato plants didn’t have a very good summer. Most of the tomatoes went bad before they fully ripened on the vine. But they’re still trying to produce a few more for the table, despite the shorter, cooler days of fall.

This photo wasn’t meant for the blog. I was just trying to take a few sample photos with a lens I’d like to sell, because it hasn’t been used for years. The intent was to walk around the yard just before sunset, looking for examples that would show the lens’ abilities as far as sharpness, color, bokeh and control of chromatic aberration.

I’m not sure why I like the image. After all, it’s just a tomato, and there’s nothing creative about the composition. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of summer, and I wish it would last a little longer. Maybe it’s because I see humor in what appears to be a zipper on its skin. Anyway, like most of this year’s crop, the other side of this one was rotten. At least it made me smile.

Archery Season Availability

Archers, keep my trophy phone number handy on Saturday and for the rest of the season. Since nobody had the confidence to book me for a specific time , at this point I’m still available for trophy portraits. I say trophy, but, of course, any deer is a trophy!

Why are creative, quality portraits important? Well, for example, fish and game mounts are an excellent way to remember your hunting and fishing accomplishments. But what about you, your friends or relatives, details of the day, and the environment where you harvested the game or caught the fish? Photos, done right, tell a story and are a great complement to a mount.

On the other hand, a harvested animal isn’t necessary for great portraits that document your day in pursuit of game. Devoting a couple of hours to photography, without the need to get your trophy out of the bush, allows us to spend more time concentrating on you and the way you hunt.

If you bag one, call me as soon as possible! If you’re within 20 miles of Halifax and reasonably close to a road, I’ll do my best to get there in time for photos in the field. Of course, don’t risk spoiled venison if the ETA is too long. We can still get some great shots later. In order to create the best possible portraits, please keep the animal’s eyes open, and wipe off any blood before it dries. Keep in mind that this is first come, first served.

Clark’s Ferry Bridge Sunset

This will make beautiful 12″ x 24″ framed prints and canvas wraps for home decor. That blur on the bridge is what a tractor trailer looks like at a slow shutter speed! For anyone who’s not familiar with Clark’s Ferry, it’s a landmark with quite a bit of history. It carries U.S. Routes 22/322 traffic and Appalachian Trail hikers across the Susquehanna River near Duncannon, north of Harrisburg. At this point, hikers are 1138.9 miles from the beginning of the trail at Springer Mountain, Georgia, and 1040.2 miles from the end at Baxter Peak-Katahdin, Maine, according to the Appalachian Trail Distance Calculator.

Kudos to PennDOT for salvaging this marker from the old bridge, which was nicknamed, The Gangplank, for its narrow lanes. You can find it at the west end of the bridge, on the downstream side. The current bridge was completed in 1986.

Anyone who drove across the bridge while I photographed this plaque, saw me holding a camera in one hand and a large reflector over my shoulder with the other. Although a breeze made it difficult, I succeeded in throwing some light onto the lettering, which was in total shade, to make it stand out more. Of course I could have just used a flash, but at the risk of creating glare, which would have made the lettering difficult to read. Anyway, I’m sure I got some stares—but no more than when I’m photographing while wearing hip boots or knee pads. Hey, whatever it takes!
